Bel Canto / Black Monk Cie 13 / Rosa Mei have three productions available for UK touring in 2007:- Bel Canto for the stage, Black Monk for site specific locations and the original score for 'Bel Canto' created by the Cie 13 Musicians (more) available as a stand alone music performance. BEL CANTO JUNE 2006 PREMIERED - GDYNIA, POLAND 'There is no excellent beauty that hath not some strangeness in proportion' - Francis Bacon
Inspired by the psychological mood paintings of Edvard Munch, Rosa Mei structures 'Bel Canto' as a series of poems on love, life and death. A celebration of communal ritual, an endless scream passing through nature, eulogies and lullabies creating a landscape of the soul. The original score for 'Bel Canto' created by the Cie 13 musicians - beatboxers, Polish, Congolese and French rappers, a jazz instrumentalist and a South African opera diva - puts a new spin on arias by bel canto composers Rossini, Puccini, Donizetti (with a bit of Bach and Brahms for good measure) by adding funk beats to deconstruct the classical idiom. A human pulse for a modern passion play. Director/choreographer: Rosa Mei Beatbox/Rap: 'Fab-Faya' Bilomba Beatbox/Jazz : Teddy Guilbaud Polish rap & song: Oscar Mienandi Lyric Soprano: Donita Volkwijn Dancers: Arkadiusz 'Maly' Franczak, Dariusz 'Duracell' Kryla, Milan Labouiss, Francis Manayala Mabidi, Radoslaw 'Tao' Peciak, Angela Taboszczak BLACK MONK Who is the Black Monk? Is he a symbol of madness, the ghost of Rasputin or the soul of the three lonely Dominican monks who once lived in these cloisters? Rosa Mei & Cie 13 present a psychological tale told through ballet, breakdance, beatbox and opera in a haunted cathedral and monastery where a shrouded stranger plays the organ and the spirits of mad monks linger. The path through the old sanctuary give clues to the mysterious figure of the Black Monk - his supernatural spirit and his link to dementia. Partake of our daily bread, visit the garden of earthly delights and flock to the vespers along a path filled with vertiginous dance and radical, urban beats mixed with Gregorian chants.
